Downstairs, Killian located his shirt and shoes near the spot of their most recent bout of lovemaking. Sex wasn’t something he had intended when he’d made the decision to come to Gen’s place today. But he’d felt like he had something to prove after witnessing the overt display she’d put on for his benefit with the douche looking to take his spot in his kid’s life.

Over his dead fucking body.

The problem was, the moment he’d touched her, had her in his arms, he’d lost his head a bit. He wasn’t going to apologize for it, not when it was exactly where he wanted to be. But watching her get sick afterward, knowing that this pregnancy was taking its toll on Gen, brought forth all his protective urges.

Moving around her kitchen, he found some herbal tea that had ginger in it but made a mental note to pick some straight ginger tea up at the store for her. If she wasn’t going to take care of herself properly then he would step up and do it. He got the tea steeping and figured she could use something bland and nutritious in her belly.

Killian made himself at home as he rifled through her pantry until he found what he was searching for: chicken noodle soup and some saltine crackers. He got the soup heating on the stove, took one of the apples in the fruit bowl on the counter and sliced it up into wedges. By the time Gen joined him in the kitchen, he had the apple and crackers on a plate, was serving up soup into a bowl, and the tea was properly steeped.

“Have a seat.” He nodded to the table.

“You cooked?”

“I figured you could use some sustenance of the bland variety. Over the next few weeks, until the morning sickness abates, you’ll want to stick with a bland diet.”

“I know. It was stupid of me to get that ice cream today,” she said, looking like a strong wind would topple her over as she sat at the table.

“Why did you?” he asked, carrying it all over to the table for her, worried about the strain he saw around her eyes.

“I was starving, and it sounded so good after weeks of nothing but crackers and dry toast. I know it’s not forever, but it’s hard being hungry and nauseated. When I know my body needs sustenance, but it tends to reject that fuel.”

“Are you taking prenatal vitamins yet? If not, I can find out the brands both my sisters-in-law used when they were pregnant.”

“You have more than one sister-in-law?”

“Yep. I’ve got two of them. Both my older brothers are married, with two kids apiece.” And he thought that Gen would fit right in with the bunch. In all his years, that had never happened with a woman.

“So, you’re the baby of the family?”

“Nope. That honor rests with my sister.”

“Your parents had four kids? And you all got along with each other?” she asked with a hint of longing in her voice that made him wonder where it stemmed from.
